The Fo-RESTARE project stems from an important agreement between Phoresta, the Monterano Regional Natural Reserve and the Agricultural University of Canale Monterano.

The agreement aims at enhancing the eco-system services generated by the sustainable management of two woodlands in the Monterano Reserve, thus at promoting the production of carbon credits.

To explain the importance of this initiative – which once again sees the leading role of Phoresta in the promotion of the Italian forest heritage – it is necessary to start from the Agricultural University of Canale Monterano, that owns 900 hectares of pastures and woodlands.

For the administration of these assets, a sustainable forest management plan has been adopted which favors the multi-functionality of forests and woodlands.

In particular, the Agricultural University made its forest areas available for the promotion of eco-system services and CO2 compensation.

With this in mind, Dr. Fabio Scarfò, an Officer of the Lazio Region, estimated that 10,000 carbon credits would have been generated by the increase of biomass due to the suspension of tree cutting in the protected areas.

Therefore, Phoresta agreed to pay the Agricultural University the total amount of € 50,000, over a period of 4 years .

The Agricultural University will comply with the provisions of its forest management plan and will not undertake the forest cuts initially foreseen for a period of 16 seasons.

This action will generate carbon credits that can be spent in the voluntary carbon market and can be purchased by subjects who want to compensate the emission of greenhouse gases of their business.

With the Fo-RESTARE Project, Phoresta intends to contribute to the mitigation of the effects of Climate Change.
